About the author:
Justin M. Woodward is an author from Dothan, Alabama. He lives in Headland, Alabama with his wife and two small boys. While primarily known for his horror works (Tamer AnimalsRotten Little Things) he has works spanning various genres. His work has been featured in Scream Magazine and his stories have appeared in books alongside authors such as Stephen King and Neil Gaiman. Justin also has a love for comedy, having co-written the hilarious Jerry’s Book Sucks: The Book, and works as a stand up comedian as well as hosts a comedy podcast called Dead Mom Club.

Michelle Garza: Michelle Garza is part of the Bram Stoker Award nominated writing team The Sisters of Slaughter. The twin sisters, hailing from Arizona, were dubbed the Sisters of Slaughter for their brutal horror stories. Their work has been published by Death’s Head Press, Dead Sky Publishing, Thunderstorm books, Agora, and Realm Media.

Daniel Franco: Daniel Franco has been working as an artist in the independent comics scene since 2015, helping many talented writers to self-publish their work both nationally and worldwide. May that be by doing black and white or full colored pages. Since 2019, he has released three graphic novels in Brazil (All The Gold I Can Carry, Bad Influence, and Jugular), thanks to his fruitful partnership with his friends from Risco Indie Comics.

Rob Gaughran: Rob was born and raised in Brooklyn NY and then moved when he was still a teen to the rural mountains of western Massachusetts where he lives as a family man and draws while not working his day-to-day as a firefighter.

As a child that grew up in the late ’80s, Rob had a healthy dose of bad action movies, slasher horror flicks, Saturday morning cartoons, and the comics craze of the ’90s. He watched Anime back when it was still a dirty little secret amongst American nerds.

These days he enjoys diving into his favorite subject of horror, reading dude-bro-lit, and watching old gritty violent Action flicks or low-brow comedy. Most of all, He enjoys time with his family doing family stuff.

Death’s Head Press is putting together an anthology of cold/winter horror short stories.

Winter is a setting that lends itself to various horror tales, from survival tales to hauntings to slashers with buckets of blood in the snow. Humans long ago mastered survival in the cold, but what happens when one of the necessities (heat, shelter, food) is taken away? What if that lovely cabin in the woods comes with a helping of the supernatural or otherworldly? The stories can and should cover the wide spectrum of coldness. We aim to explore the what if of the cold.

The specifics:

  • Original stories not previously published.
  • Word count per story: 2,500 – 10,000 words
  • Deadline for submissions: March 31, 2024
  • Pay is $0.04 per word
  • Accepted parties will be notified by April 30, 2024

About the creators:

R.K. Latch is the author of novels, novellas, short stories and comics. Most of his dark and fantastical fiction centers around the fictional southern Winchester County, Mississippi. R.K. lives back in the woods with his wife and daughter.

Arjuna Susini was born in Livorno, Italy, in 1984. He graduated from the International School of Comics in Florence in 2008. In 2011, his first comic, Bullet Ballad, was published by BD Edizioni. Since then he’s worked on a growing number of titles for a myriad of publishers; Mistry P.I., Shikary Force: Hunters, Made Men, Leone, The Replacer, Heist or How to Steal a Planet, Blood of Sunset, Forever Forward, Lamentation, and as a concept artist for Mighty Box on the game Posthuman: Sanctuary. He’s a teacher of the “Scuola internationale di Comics” in Florence.

About the creators:

J.M. Brandt is the black metal love child of Vincent Price and Pee-wee Herman. He is a professional horror personality, the arbiter of good bad taste, and an ace podcast guest. Brandt is the creator and co-writer for Swamp Dogs: House of Crows from Scout Comics, and the writer of Twas the Night–an anthology story for Holiday Spirits Volume 3 from Orange Cone Productions. His work has been compared to the pre-code horror books of E.C. Comics. An Active Member of the HWA, Brandt lives with his wife and son amongst bikers and cowboys in the chaparral.
